Buffalo Board Games = Hours Of Teen Fun {review}

In our home we normally have a family game night every few weeks. While everyone participates, often my teenage son gives me the “are you kidding me mom I would rather play my xbox” look. One night we do a game with my oldest and us (parents) and then we do games with the smaller ones. My oldest gets tired of playing games that are appropriate for all ages (he would rather have his nose glued to the xbox or PS3), not to mention he gets frustrated playing games with his little brothers and sisters. I guess we can not blame him, he is sick to death of Candy Land and other kiddy games.

We have most board games found in Wal-Mart like Monopoly, Sorry, Taboo, Scattergories, Loaded Questions, and a ton of games for the younger kids. To be honest, I am about tried of the the same games too.

When I was introduced to Buffalo Games I saw they had several games that seemed like fun. Not just for me, but for my son too. Buffalo Games sent me two board games, Likewise & Truth Be Told. Both board games are designed for multiple players ages 14+.

A Run Down on The Board Games

Truth Be Told is a new laugh-out-loud, pretend to know your friends game! Each round, one of the players is the Host, and plays a question card such as, “Truth Be Told, my favorite snack is _________.” The Host writes a truthful answer – pork rinds. All other players pretend to be the Host, and write bluff answers –which seems like something the Host wrote – pretzels, prunes, sardines. The Host collects and reads all answers aloud, and players try to guess the True Answer to score points.

Likewise! is a thought provoking game where it pays to think alike. In this game, individuals are presented with a random pairing of a Description and Subject Cards. The pairing might be “Exotic – Car”, or “Massive – Breakfast Food” or something like that. Next, players write down or doodle their answers in secret. Finally, they flip their paddles, reveal their answers (and a little bit about themselves in a way). Matching answers move ahead on the game board and the first to the winner’s circle is declared the champ.

What We Thought

My son often has his buddies stay over and they stay up half the night playing video games, so we were interested to see what his friends thought about playing a board game instead of the video game for once. I could tell when I mentioned it to the boys, they were like are you kidding me? I could see it in their faces, oh no what do you mean we need to put down the video game controllers? But everyone agreed (with a bowl of popcorn), to rest their video game zombie games for a little while and play some board games.

teen gamesLikeWise! was a big hit with the boys! We explained the directions of the game and let the boys have at it. The directions are easy to understand which makes the game even better! No one had to keep checking the directions to make sure they were playing right.

To play the game, you flip one card over from each stack and put them next to each other. Those cards are used to create how you will answer. Players write the answer or draw it on the dry erase board (paddle) and keep the answers a secret. When everyone has answered, the answers are revealed to everyone at the same time. Who ever has the same answer gets a point.

Within about 10 minutes of starting the game (after the boys did not find it fun to beat each other with the paddles), they were all hooting away. Everyone was enjoying see the answers of other players and I was enjoying seeing the kids play something other than a video game!

The kids really enjoyed playing and spent a few hours at the table going at it. Actually they make it look so fun, the hubby and I decided we wanted in! Everyone had a great time laughing and giggling (especially me, seeing the teens answers).

This is really a fun game that can be played by multiple players. While the game says it is for ages 14+, I really think a 10 or 11 year old could play too. I have enjoyed playing Likewise!, much more than the older games we have played 100 times.

There are so many card options, you can play over and over and still enjoy it. My sons buddies ask every time they come over it we are going to play anymore games!

board game reviewsTruth Be Told is my personal favorite! The game includes 141 Truth Be Told cards (total of 564 questions), eight dry-erase markers, eight fill in the blank cards, eight paddles, one scoreboard and playing instructions. The object of the game is to pretend to know your friends or other players.  Players score points on questions about other players either by guessing the true answer, or by fooling others into guessing a Bluff Answer.

In each round, one player is the Host, and plays a question card. The Host writes the real answer while all the other players pretend to be the Host, and write bluff answers which would seem like something the Host would have written.  The Host collects and reads all answers aloud, for players to try to guess the true

This game is really great for adults or teens! I have laughed so much playing this game my tummy hurt!

I love how there are not a hundred small pieces to get lost! I can not stand when a game has so many pieces to try and keep up with, because when you lose them you can no longer enjoy the game.

Truth Be Told retails for $27.99, which is a bit more than many games on the market, but it really is worth it. The cards are thick and do not bend up and the game is really a lot of fun to play!

I highly recommend these games to moms of kids aged 13+.  Not to mention to any adult who needs a fun game for an adult night or a fun party game!

Disclosure: Buffalo Games provided me with a copy of each game to play and review. The opinions about these board games are mine alone and not influenced by Buffalo Games in any fashion.

  4. THIS would be fun for our extended family Christmas party too. the teens and 20 somethings are always glazed over like…HOW long do we have to stay be here to keep Grandma happy look? That’s fun that you get to find out about people this way. We have a similar game my tween and friends like to play but this sounds like more fun for the older ones. Yeah…I’d love to get my son and his friends to lay down those controllers too. Maybe even gift this to the neighbors who have a great basement and are forever hosting our son & friends! Price would be about right for that type of gift! thanks for tellin’ us!
