Day 1: Starting My New Year’s Resolution Early

Being the impatient person that I am, I’ve decided to start my New Year’s Resolutions a little early. I get so excited this time of year, mainly because of Christmas and the festivities, but also because I love New Year’s and the idea of a fresh start and clean slate.

Here are my resolutions for 2012 (and most of December 2011):

1. Start using COUPONS and be a better  GROCERY SHOPPER.

Yes, The Shopping Mom, the one who posts coupons on this site to encourage you to save money, doesn’t use them herself. The truth is out. I waste soooo much money at the grocery store. I spend probably $500 per month at the store for a family of three. And we NEVER have anything to eat for dinner during the week.

My goal is to cut my monthly grocery bill in HALF! I know I can do it if I start using coupons and combine them with fabulous sales. Why am I not doing it now? I think it’s a combination of laziness and organization. So here are my steps for cutting my grocery bill and staying organized.

  • I’m going to buy one of those groovy coupon holders to keep my coupons handy – and I’m going to keep it in my car! I can not remember to bring coupons to the store to save my life.
  • Each week I’m going to throw away expired coupons and replace with new ones.
  • I’m going to pay more attention to the weekly sales where I shop the most; Target, Walmart and King Soopers.
  • I learned that I can electronically load coupons onto my King Soopers card through their website (yippee!), I did it for the first time today. So now I don’t even need to remember to bring them with me! I will do this every weekend.
  • I’m a terrible shopper. As I said, I can spend $100+ at the store, get home and not have anything to make a meal with. I’m going to start making a good list based on meal-planning before heading to the store.

2. Cut back my Starbucks trips to 1 per week (except on special occasions):

I love me some Starbucks.  But I don’t need to spend $16+ per week there. I’m perfectly fine treating myself to a Chai latte once per week and drinking free black coffee (which I love) at work the rest of the week.  I’m not going to be too hard on myself with this though. If a friend wants to meet at Starbucks for a coffee and I’ve already had my one for the week, well tough nookies, I’m going.

3. Eat more vegetables.

I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. We’ll see how I do. Wish me luck.

And to make sure I stick with #1, I’m going to be recording my progress right here on TheShoppingMom blog. I’m also going to be giving tips, and my findings along the way. And of course I’ll be sharing coupons. The only difference is now I’ll be using them.

Stay tuned and join in the fun! I want to hear about your tips and tricks along the way!

What are your New Year’s Resolutions? Have you thought about it yet?
