Tip #1 – Use a Baking Soda Paste – For shower and tub walls that have tough rust stains or hard water stains, using a baking soda paste created with dishwashing liquid and baking soda is a green cleaning method. Apply the paste with a small sponge and then scrub with a nylon scrubber. Make sure you rinse thoroughly after using the paste to eliminate any residue. This paste can also be used on tough stains that appear on sinks or ceramic tile. You can even make a baking soda multipurpose cleaning that includes water, baking soda and liquid dish soap to help clean up grout in the bathroom.
Tip #2 – Target Soap Scum with Vinegar – Soap scum is the enemy of a clean bathroom. Instead of nasty chemicals, vinegar can help you to eliminate soap scum the natural way. Spray shower and tub walls, shower doors or even sinks with a diluted vinegar spray. Allow the spray to dry, then spray the area again and wipe the soap scum away. Vinegar will even help eliminate a bathtub ring when you soak cleaning cloths in undiluted vinegar and allow them to set on the ring for 10 minutes. After allowing to set, spray again and then use a sponge or scrubber to finish eliminating the ring.
Tip #3 – Prevent Mildew with Vinegar – Many people forget about the shower curtain when working to maintain a clean, green bathroom. Without preventive maintenance, your shower curtain may quickly begin a prime spot for mildew to grow. To keep your shower curtain from developing mildew, spray the curtain after every shower with a mixture of water and vinegar. If a bit of mildew still appears, use baking soda paste to scrub it off.
Tip #4 – Green Clean the Toilet – Traditional toilet bowl cleaners are full of hazardous chemicals, but you can enjoy a clean bathroom without these tough cleaners. In fact, to easily achieve that sparkling white look, you simply need some baking soda and vinegar. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a ½ cup of vinegar, pouring into your toilet bowl. Allow this mixture to sit for 30-40 minutes. Then use a toilet bowl to scrub the bowl. This only needs to be done about once a week to keep your toilet bowl clean.
Tip #5 – Stop Using Paper Towels – To focus on a green bathroom, stop using paper towels when working to clean the area. Instead of paper towels, you can purchase reusable cleaning cloths that can simply be washed when you are done. Have a stack of clean reusable cleaning cloths on hand all the time to help you keep up your clean bathroom each day.
