What is a mole?

A mole is a growth on the skin forming a dark spot or a lesion which can either be sub-dermal or just an abnormal pigment on the skin. Moles are also known as melanocytic naevus. It is one among other skin conditions that form freckles and skin tags. It can be classified in to two types based on the time of appearance and location on the skin
Causes of moles
Scientists have associated moles to the effects of the harmful ultra violet radiations from the sun. These radiations make the skin cells (melanocytes) to grow in clusters instead of the usual spreading. Melanocytes are responsible for the normal skin color. However, on exposure to the sun, they darken forming moles, a case common during pregnancy or teenage years of an individual’s life.

Symptoms of moles malignancy
Moles can appear after birth (congenital nevi) or appear larger than average and in irregular shapes at the later stages of life (dysplastic nevi). However, if a mole on your skin is more than 8 inches in diameter, it poses a risk of developing into a malignant growth (cancerous). A number of other symptoms can be used to identify malignant moles and these are;If the mole is itchy and very painful when scratched
Change in color
Moles get darker than usual. Formation of pigmented lesions that may bleed spontaneously.
How to spot moles’ malignancy
As mentioned above, particularly the change in shape and color of the moles can be used to quickly identify the moles on your skin. They can also be spotted with the help of a professional dermatologist. Such a professional can ascertain the nature of the mole based on your hereditary history.
It’s important to note that not all change in color indicate malignancy, some moles are benign while showing all the signs of malignancy. To differentiate between the two, you should check on regular basis mole’s texture and appearance.

Some famous people have very noticeable moles on their faces. For instance, Angelina Jolie (Actress & Human Rights Activist) has a mole on her forehead. Another celebrity is Morgan Freeman, an actor with very many moles on his face. Others include Eva Mendes (actress & model), Enrique Iglesias (singer), Kelly Rowland (singer) etc.

Mole removal

A vast majority of moles are harmless as stated above and hence require no treatment or removal. However, if the mole is melanoma or bothersome to the patient’s looks it may be surgically removed. Removal may be performed for cosmetic or medical reason. Moles are usually circular, oval or asymmetrical and can be removed using the following ways.
Shave excision; this technique is commonly used for the small moles. The area around the mole is numbed while a small blade is used to cut under the mole in order to remove it. No stiches are required.
Excision biopsy; this technique is more advanced than shave excision. The region of a healthy skin surrounding the mole is cut out plus the mole, stitches are required.
How to protect yourself from malignant moles (skin cancer).

It is very true that you can’t prevent the formation of a mole. However, you can minimize the chances of developing malignant melanoma by having routine check on your moles for any changes or limiting your exposure to the sun.
