Mom’s Christmas Break Luxuries

While it’s so nice to have the kids home for Christmas break, you’re allowed to admit having some “me time” would be nice. Kids have a tendency to get a little…hyper…this time of year — and who can blame them? With sweets galore, no homework, and presents on the way, it’s an exciting time for little ones. When your kids’ energy starts to get to you, take half an hour off for some mommy time. Have a loved one or a friend watch the kids — or send them outside to build a snow man while you stay in and keep an eye on them from indoors. While you’re sans kids, enjoy one of these little luxuries:

  • magazine and coffee — During a grocery trip, grab a magazine at checkout and keep it hidden until you find a moment of silence. When you have some time to yourself, brew yourself a cup of coffee, grab the magazine, and catch up on your favorite subject. (This is a good activity to do when the kids are outside in the snow and you still need to keep an eye on them.) For an extra special holiday treat, put a dollop of peppermint ice cream in the coffee.
  • face mask — A face mask will make your skin look great and help you relax. You can buy face masks at the store, but why not make your own? A homemade cucumber mint mask will stimulate your skin — while putting you in the holiday spirit with its mint scent! All you need to do is cut a washed cucumber into small pieces. Blend the pieces in a food processor until they are well mashed. Drain out and discard the juices and put 1/2 cup of the cucumber solids in a microwaveable bowl. Add a splash of water and microwave the cucumber for 4 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup finely chopped mint leaves and microwave for 5 minutes on medium. Once this mixture is cool, spread it on your clean face and neck. Keep it on y0ur face for 15 minutes (go ahead and take a load off! Lay down for 15 minutes). Wash the mask off with cold water and dry your skin with a towel — instant rejuvenation! (Hint: You can make a bulk batch of this mask in advance and store it in an air-tight jar in your refrigerator for a month.)
  • nails — Get a new nail polish and give yourself an at-home manicure. If you’re feeling especially stressed, give yourself an at-home hand soak before you apply your polish. Soak your finger nails in warm olive oil to soften your cuticles and then massage a little of the oil onto your hands for instant soft skin.
  • browse the Internet — Take a few minutes to look around Pinterest or your favorite blog. If you’re in need of some new online reads, I recommend Skunkboy Creatures, Cupcakes and Cashmere, and A Cup of Jo.And I think a cup of piping hot chamomile tea goes with Internet browsing perfectly.
