Trench Coats, A Must In Spring Fashion

Never before has an article of clothing so stylishly gone from battlefield, to Hollywood, to closets worldwide.

Meet the trench coat.

Today’s trench has come a long way from its humble beginnings as the heavy cotton twill jacket first designed for British army officers in the early 1900s. Nicknamed “trench” because the men wore it while fighting in trenches. Back then, the coats were outfitted with a D-ring rumored to be used for securing grenades.

Years later, Hollywood heavyweights like Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart brought the iconic piece into the mainstream after sporting them in blockbusters like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Casablanca.

More recently, Claire on ABC’s Modern Family was filmed sporting a trench for a romantic Valentine’s Day episode.

This year’s trenches have once again been recast in a variety of lengths, colors and fabrics. Whether you live in rainy Seattle, or sun-drenched Florida, there is a trench coat style waiting for you at your favorite shopping center.

For those who want something warmer, trenches come in cotton and wool blends that are adorable, warm and cozy. There are three-quarter-length versions with a thick hood and drawstring closure. One popular style is by XCVI’s that zips in the front and comes in chocolate brown.

For those who live in warm weather climates, there are lightweight cotton fabrics and rain resistant numbers. Macy’s has a wide range of styles of trench coats from classic colors like black and navy, perfect for work wear, to more edgy colors. Their bold spring offerings include raspberry sorbet, tiger lily, green and lemon chrome. Fun floral patterns and animal prints are also available from INC International Concepts or American Rag.

The beauty of trench coats is they can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. It can be as simple as changing out the belt, rolling up the sleeves or adding a scarf.  Trenches can be your chosen outerwear whether you’re headed to a wedding or a weekend at the beach.

The trench coat is perfect for busy moms with kids.  Many moms will just throw a trench coat on over sweat pants when they take the kids to school. It hides everything and gives them a chic look.

Another popular paring is with leggings. Add a bit of flair to jeans and boots by adding a colorful trench coat. Or you can spruce up a spring skirt by wearing a short version of a trench on top.

No matter how you wear it or what you wear it with, you can’t go wrong adding a trench to your wardrobe. They’re a great investment piece because the classics never go out of style no matter what your pocket book can afford. You can find more affordable trench coats, for as little as $50 at stores like Old Navy, or spend upwards of $1,000 on trenches at Burberry.

No matter how much you spend, you’ll still be getting a classic style. What other piece of clothing has a more than a century of history on its side?
