Turning Postage Stamp Collections Into Artwork

Most of us have collections or items that we once prized, now taking up valuable storage space in our attics, basements, or spare room. Although it may be true that some are worth money in the hands of the right collector, most will never be sold, and will sit until the collection mildews or becomes otherwise unusable. Postage stamp collections are an excellent example of a collection that can easily and fairly cheaply be turned into something unique for your home.

Turning a stamp collection into an artistic display is not only unique, it is eco-friendly because you are reusing an item that you already have for a decorative purpose; this saving you money and keeps the item in usable condition, and therefore out of a landfill.

Stamp Collage

Photograph collages are one of the most popular decorative accents for a room, but people make the mistake of believing that pictures are the only medium for adding creativity to a collage. Postage stamps also make great collages, and you can use a wide variety of them to create your own artwork, no matter what room you are decorating.

Start by choosing the stamps that you want to incorporate into the artwork. You may opt to save the most valuable stamps, as they will lose most of their value if you adhere them to a collage board or paper. Once you have everything where you want it, a small amount of glue from a hot glue gun, or just a standard tube of glue, will hold the stamps in place. You could also use double-sided tape to adhere with less mess.

Unique Framed Picture

Prints are another very popular decorative accent, and postage stamps make great artwork additions to almost any room. Framing the stamps is an excellent method for showcasing the collection without ruining most of the value, while still adding a touch of class and refinement to your wall. This type of artwork is inexpensive, but really shows your sense of individuality when it comes to artwork in your home.

These prints are very easy to create, especially if you are simply looking for something simple and basic. Start with a sheet of construction paper or cardboard in a neutral color, and then use the stamp itself as a focal point. Then, use a matte to finish the look and add a more refined feel to the picture. Finally, add a beautiful frame, which does not have to be expensive, to complete your unique artwork.

Turning postage stamp collections into artwork is just one of many ways that you can save money and protect the environment while still adding culture and beauty to your home. With some guidance from the professionals, and a little bit of experimentation, you can take something that you might have otherwise ended up in the trash, and turn it into something really unique and fabulous, whether you incorporate one stamp or one hundred into the artwork.

  2. I used to collect stamps when I was a kid. It was a great hobby and I learned a lot about a variety of places and people. I would have never thought to use them as decoration. That’s a pretty neat idea… mtdoonmeister at gmail dot com
